But, to my surprise, working on these problems that were not directly related to my role provided me with a lot of knowledge about the company’s platform and infrastructure. And ultimately it allowed me to be promoted to Lead Software Engineer. If I had tried to do data engineering without first addressing these pain points, I would probably be doing a poor job and complaining about the problems without doing anything to solve them. And they would have hired someone else to be the Lead Software Engineer.
